The biggest exception was that the X proved unsteerable in any wave action over about 2 feet. We sailed in company with the Mac 19, and the both 26X and 26M (for that matter, I sailed an X myself about a half dozen times) and we could / did sail rings around them in any / all conditions. This boat is nobody's idea of a speedster. The Mac Pow-R-Sail-R model M is if anything a very slight improvement on the sailing performance of the X, both are abysmal unless you are comparing them to heavy tubs and/or beaters with ragged-out sails. My wife and I spent about a decade bopping around in a Hunter 19, the tubby water-ballast model. Home.Depends on how you compare them. MacGregor 26X, 2000, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 14,999, Price reduced 4/15/11 to 14,250, Ad expired. You need powerful winches because otherwise your niece won't be able to trim the roller-furling genoa any closer than a beam reach. "We're not racing so we don't need powerful winches."No. Stick a rube behind the classy 12-inch (30 cm) wheel and they will be lucky to hit 2 knots if they can manage to keep it pointed in one direction long enough for the random trim of the sails to actually be marginally effective.Same with under-size hardware - especially winches. A racer can make any 3.5-knot shit-box go, well, 3.5 knots. When they ask why a Mac 26 is so bad I reply, "Because it sails poorly." They respond with, "Well I'm not a racer so I don't really care about that."No. That sailing isn't really much fun.Ah! You've touched on a point that I've been making for decades.I have a lot of friends that have a very casual relationship with sailing and it usually involves talking and dressing like a pirate, drinking, and how many bedrooms does it have.
![]() But hey, they sell a lot of them, mostly to people who weren't going to be sailors anyway. What makes it worse IMHO is that MacGregor -used- to build and sell boats which sailed pretty well.People try normal sailboats and have that reaction too. It's fun in and of itself, however having a boat that sails poorly (which is different from just being slow) is frustrating and potentially dangerous. Then they move to the 'sports car' FJs and suddenly they realize that just sailing around, chasing each other or whatever, is FUN!! Who knew? The other day the two 'advanced' kids we turned loose in our 5O5 had huge orgasmic grins (alternating with stark panic) zipping thru the sail drills.I have no objection to just floating around on the water, doing whatever and having fun. They learn the basics and get to sail drills. Most start out in Oday Javelins which is heavy and tubby, but it has workable foils and a pretty generous mainsail which has good workable rigging. Sailing one of these is like skiing with 2x4s strapped to your feet, or bowling with a ball that isn't round.Contrast that to the kids in the local high school program. For video editing should i get flash or fusion with macI've seen it.Then there are people like JR above, who just want a multipurpose boat. Powerboaters who did not want to jump all the way to a sailboat, and probably would never jump at all if there were no halfway point. In other cases, people really like that engine shutting down moment and before long don't care about the powerboat aspect and want a better sailboat.
